Race and Clinic Safety Procedures
The Trappers' Running Club has put in place a new set of Race and Clinic Safety Procedures since the start of the 2014 running season. These policies reflect the current safety policies that are being followed by the Newfoundland and Labrador Athletics Association and Athletics Canada.
General Safety Procedures:
- If running on the road, always run against traffic.
- If running on a sidewalk or trail stick to the right and pass on the left.
- Do not run with more than two people side-by-side when running on the road.
- Always alert pedestrians when you are passing.
Running at Night:
- If possible, choose a well lit route.
- Be visible. Wear light coloured clothing, a head lamp and/or reflectors.
- When possible, run with a buddy.
- Carry a cell phone.
- Be aware of your surrounds (yes, this means that you have to ditch the music).
Safety Procedures for Clinics:
- We are recommending that all clinic members adhere to the 'No Ear Bud' policy during all training clinics. This is especially important during the Learn to Run, as runners need to be able to hear the whistle. Also, coaches need to be able to talk with runners in order to offer suggestions and motivation.
Safety Procedures for Races (not including the Trapline Marathon):
- We are recommending that no runner run with pets, bicycles, wagons, roller blades, skateboards, hand cycle, motorized vehicle, motorized wheelchair, and head phones of any type. We will also be discouraging runners from running with strollers, especially on narrow trails.
- Arrive early for the event, especially if you have not pre-registered. On that note, please pre-register.
- Always pin your bib to the front of your shirt.
- Line up according to how fast you plan to walk/run the race.
- Most importantly enjoy yourself!!!
Age Categories:
Learn to Run - Runners must be 12 years and over on the first day of the clinic. Runners that are less than 12 years of age must be accompanied by an adult member and will need to be approved by a member of the Executive.
10 KM Clinic - Runners must be 12 years and over on the first day of the clinic.
Half Clinic - Runners must be 16 years and over on the first day of the clinic.
Full Clinic - Runners must be 18 years and over on the first day of the clinic.
These age categories are based on recommendations from the International Association of Athletics Federation. For more information please go to: http://www.iaaf.org/home.
We recommend that all runners become familiar with the NLAA Safety Policies. These policies can be found at:
